Safety info for Ghost & Big Horn Back Country

The “Ghost Area Wilderness” and “Bighorn Backcountry” are part of a region known as the “Rocky Mountain Forestry Reserve”, and comprise the lower slopes of the Rocky Mountains, east of Banff National Park. Each region is zoned and managed for multiple uses (recreation, grazing, forestry, oil and gas) in order to protect the environment and maintain responsible and sustainable use of the land.

This region is home to a wide variety of wildlife (including Alberta’s Wild Horses), inland lakes, waterfalls, rivers and mountain flora. Most areas are open to (and fantastic for) hiking, fishing, horseback riding and outdoor recreation. Certain areas are designated for use with off-road vehicles. Please see below for information on land use and Bear Smart tips.

Below are PDF copies of maps and safety tips for the region.
